Scholarships For Women
A lot of scholarships for women are developed with the goal of attracting women to study in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics which still have a very small female representation and dominated by males. Some scholarships for women are also developed to help promotes leadership in the business world and obtaining an advance degrees such as PhD. This does not mean that they are limited scholarship for other majors because there are other scholarships for female students as well. As always, students need to search and find out which scholarships they are eligible for.
There are some scholarships for women tailored just for women in such a way that they encourage female students to not only successes in college but also afterwards.
Why Scholarships for Women are Plentiful
In the past there are very few women in pursue of a higher education but now more women attend college than men. However, work place inequalities in the kinds of position and ranks between men and women still exist. Majority of women still earn less than men. Like minorities, women are still underrepresented in fields related to science and mathematics.
It is because of these reasons that scholarships for women are very plentiful. This means that women have a greater chance of obtaining a scholarship then they normally would in the past.
Science and Technology Scholarships for Women
Colleges and Universities – As stated above, women are often underrepresented in field related science and technology. To increase the number of female students in these fields of studies, a lot of colleges and universities offer scholarships in the STEM subject area. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics as well as business, medicine, and law.
Some colleges have women associations and academic departments that study issues dealing with women and society that might also offers scholarship to female students as well. Make sure you inquire about scholarship opportunities from the college you are planning to apply.
Business and Organizations – Business and organizations also have scholarships for women with the goal of have more female students pursue studies in the sciences and technology.
Below are some scholarships offered by business and organizations.
Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
The SWE Scholarship Program provides an annual scholarship to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. Below are some facts about the scholarships
- Annually, SWE awards individual scholarships to freshmen through graduate students
- Scholarships and fellowships range from $1,000 to $10,000 each
- In 2010, SWE Society scholarship distributions were approximately $490,000
- Many professional SWE sections offer additional scholarships
Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship
In honor of Anita Borg, Google offers the Anita Borg memorial Scholarship to a group of deserving women pursuing a degree in computer science and engineering in undergraduate and graduate study. Google hopes that this scholarship will encourage more female students to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders in the field. As a bonus, all recipients of this scholarship are invited to a retreat at Google.
Deadline: February 6
Award Amount: $10,000 for one academic year
Essay Requirement: Essay is required
Eligibility:
You must meet the following to be eligible:
- be a female student entering her senior year of undergraduate study or be enrolled in a graduate program at a university in the United States;
- be enrolled in Computer Science or Computer Engineering program, or a closely related technical field as a full-time student for the 2011-2012 academic year;
- maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or 4.5 on a 5.0 scale or equivalent in your current program;
- citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to apply.
Note: Women of color from the following fields are also eligible: business administration, law, and medicine.
Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarships are also offered in Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, Europe, Middle East, New Zealand, and the United States.
Glamour’s Top 10 College Women Award
Glamour magazine is offering scholarships to 10 full-time female junior at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. All winners receive a trip to New York City and recognition in Glamour.
Deadline: December 1, Early Deadline is July 15
Award Amount: Grand prize is $20,000 and nine $3,000 prizes.
Essay Required: Yes
Eligibility:
You must be a full-time junior in an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada and must submit 2 letters of recommendation.
Judith McManus Price Scholarship
The Judith McManus Price Scholarship is open to women and minority (African American, Hispanic American, or Native American) undergraduate or graduate students planning to pursue careers as practicing planners in the public sector.
Deadline: April 30, every year
Award Amount: Between $2,000 to $4,000
Academic Standing: Undergraduate or graduate planning students
Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following requirement:
- Women and minority (African American, Hispanic American, or Native American) students enrolled in an approved Planning Accreditation Board (PAB) planning program who are citizens of the United States, intend to pursue careers as practicing planners in the public sector,
- Able to demonstrate a genuine financial need

Scholarships for Minority Women
Scholarships for minority women are plentiful. A lot of these scholarships are funded by companies, communities and organizations that would like minority women be more represented and a diverse environment. Opportunities are abundant to minority females who choose to major in one of the STEM subjects.
Minority women are not limited to scholarships offered to minority women only. They can apply to scholarships for women in general and to any scholarship they qualified for.
Below are some scholarship opportunities for minority Women:
Moss Adams Foundation Scholarship
(This is one of nine (8) scholarships administered by the Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting.)
The Moss Adams Foundation Scholarship, formerly known as Rowling, Dold & Associates LLP Scholarship, awards a scholarship to a minority female student enrolled in an accounting program at an accredited college or university.
This is for undergraduates and graduate students.
Deadline: Application must be postmark by April 30. Scholarship recipients will be selected by June 30.
Award Amount: $1000 annually
Eligibility and Selection Criteria::
- Minority women, or
- Women returning to school as current or reentry juniors or seniors, or
- Women pursuing their fifth year requirement through either general studies or within a graduate program.
- Commitment to the goal of pursuing a degree in accounting, including evidence of continued commitment after receiving the award
- Aptitude for accounting and business
- Clear evidence that the candidate has established goals and a plan for achieving those goals, both personal and professional
- Financial need
- Demonstration of how the scholarship will impact her life.

Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology (DFBSST)
African American women can apply to the Development Fund for Black Students in Science and Technology (DFBSST). This is an endowment fund which provides scholarships to African-American undergraduate students who enroll in scientific or technical fields of study at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). You must demonstrate a financial need to be considered for this award.
Deadline: Applications become available April 15th and must be submitted by June 30th. Scholarship recipients will be notified in early September. DFBSST does not provide applications to students. Applications can be obtained by contacting the science or engineering department at one of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Award Amount: Up to $2000 per year and can be renew annually for a maximum of four (4) years.
Essay Requirement: Essay and recommendation is required
Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following requirement:
- African-American, undergraduate student majoring (or intending to major) in a technical field of study (i.e., engineering, math, science, etc.),
- Be enrolled (or identify his or her intention to enroll) at one of the predominantly Black colleges or universities listed below, and
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Scholarships for Varied Groups – Women Returning to School and of Older Age
There are scholarships for women who are planning to return to college and their previous education has been interrupted due to poverty, family obligation, and other reasons. These scholarships can help ease women returning to college.
Below are some of these scholarships:
Jeannette Rankin Foundation Scholarships
The Jeannette Rankin Foundation provides nationwide scholarship opportunities for low income, 35 years and older women who have a vision of how education will benefit herself, her family and her community.
Deadline: Applications are available each November through February. Applications can be downloaded during these months from the Jeannette Rankin Foundation website Applications postmarked by March 1 and the selected scholars will be announced by July 1.
Eligibility: An applicant for a JRF scholarship must be:
- A woman, age 35 or older.
- A U.S. citizen.
- Enrolled in, or accepted to, a regionally or ACICS accredited school.
- Pursuing a technical or vocational education, an associate’s degree, or a first bachelor’s degree.
- Low-income
AARP Women’s Scholarship Program
The AARP Women’s Scholarship Program, made possible from the Wal-Mart Foundation and AARP, provides scholarship to women 40 years and older with moderate to lower incomes and limited financial resources. This scholarship program help fund women returning to school to seek new job skills through training and other educational opportunities to support themselves and their family.
Deadline: Application opens on February 1 and must be received by March 31, 11:59pm CT
Eligibility Requirement: Applicants for the AARP Women’s Scholarship Program must be:
- Women, age 40 and older
- Low-income
- Pursuing a technical or vocational education, an associate’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree
- Scholarship recipients who wish to reapply for a second year of assistance
- Enrolled in a U.S. Department of education accredited school or technical program within 6 months of the scholarship award date
Brookhaven Women in Science – Renate W. Chasman Scholarship
Renate W. Chasman Scholarship is one of three scholarships offered by Brookhaven Women in Science. This particular scholarship is for women returning to school after a break in their education.
Deadline: All application materials – forms, transcripts, reference letters, and goal statement are due by April 1 of the current year.
Award Amount: Chasman Award consists of a one-time $2,000 award presented in July of each year.
Eligibility: Applicants must be:
- women returning to school after a break in their education, and
- pursuing formal education in the natural sciences, engineering or mathematics, at the junior or senior undergraduate level or first-year graduate level at any accredited institution,
- planning at least half-time study in the upcoming academic year, (must be accepted for or currently enrolled in a degree-oriented program),
- residents of Long Island in New York State, i.e., Nassau County, Suffolk County, Brooklyn or Queens,
- U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens
